What did the study in women measure?
Participants took 5 g of creatine daily or placebo for six weeks while completing resistance training twice weekly. Researchers used a wearable ring and a sleep questionnaire. Total sleep was longer on training days in the creatine group, but broader sleep-quality measures did not significantly improve. [1]
Why is the finding still uncertain?
Only 21 participants completed the women’s study, and it lasted six weeks. A difference on training days does not establish a consistent effect across nights or populations. Larger and longer trials would help show whether the result is repeatable and meaningful for people with different sleep patterns. [1]
Can creatine make up for too little sleep?
The small sleep-deprivation experiment found improvements in selected cognitive measures after a single high dose. It did not show that creatine replaces sleep or removes the consequences of regularly sleeping too little. A laboratory performance result should not become a reason to ignore persistent sleep difficulties. [2]
What does the newer sleep-deprivation trial add?
A 2026 crossover trial in 29 adults, including 17 women, found less deterioration on selected cognitive tasks during sleep loss after a single high dose. It measured functioning while awake, not treatment of insomnia or improved sleep. The small, retrospectively registered study does not establish a routine supplement dose. [3]

What are the limits of this evidence?
Each card separates the finding from the limits. The participants, formulation and duration are part of the answer.
Sleep trial in women, 2024
Longer sleep was reported on resistance-training days in the creatine group; broader sleep findings were limited.
- Who
- 21 naturally menstruating women completed the study
- Dose
- 5 g/day plus maltodextrin, versus placebo
- Duration
- 6 weeks
- Limits
- Small exercise-linked study using wearable and questionnaire outcomes. It does not establish creatine as a sleep remedy.
Gordji-Nejad et al., 2024
Some cognitive measures improved after a high single dose during sleep deprivation.
- Who
- 15 healthy adults in a crossover experiment
- Dose
- Single 0.35 g/kg dose
- Duration
- Laboratory sleep deprivation, about 21 hours awake
- Limits
- Small experiment in a specific setting. It does not establish a routine dose for brain fog or an alternative to sleep.
