Is before or after a workout better?

Small studies have compared creatine before and after resistance exercise, with some findings favouring the later timing. The review judged the methods too limited for a firm conclusion. An apparent advantage in one small experiment should not become a rule that every woman needs to follow. [1]

02

What happens on rest days?

Daily supplementation protocols usually continue beyond workout days because they aim to maintain muscle creatine stores. That is different from taking a stimulant immediately before exercise. This describes how common study protocols are organised; it does not establish a required schedule for every person or medical situation. [2]

Can coffee be part of the routine?

Creatine and caffeine have been studied together, but the performance findings are mixed and the protocols vary. Those studies do not settle every question about putting powder in a cup of coffee. Read the coffee page for the distinction between mixing, stability and evidence about combined performance effects. [3]

What are the limits of this evidence?

Each card separates the finding from the limits. The participants, formulation and duration are part of the answer.

Review2021

Ribeiro et al., 2021

Available timing studies do not establish a reliable advantage for taking creatine before versus after training.

Who
Mixed exercise-study populations
Dose
Varied daily regimens
Duration
Varied across reviewed studies
Limits
Small studies and methodological limitations. Evidence about precise timing in women is limited.

Position stand2017

Kreider et al., 2017

Daily lower doses can raise muscle creatine stores gradually; a loading phase is optional.

Who
Mixed populations in the reviewed research
Dose
Includes 3 to 5 g/day maintenance protocols
Duration
Varied across studies
Limits
A position statement synthesising varied research. It is not an individual dosing prescription. Several authors disclose industry relationships.
