Do women need a loading phase?
No loading phase is required to use the gradual approach described in the position stand. Higher initial amounts raise muscle stores more quickly, while smaller regular amounts work over a longer period. The distinction is speed of loading, rather than proof that everyone needs a high-dose start. [1]
Do women over 50 need a different amount?
The 2026 review found benefits in studies using at least 5 g daily alongside resistance training. Lower-dose studies without that training showed no measurable effect. Because both dose and training differed, this comparison does not prove a universal threshold or show what an individual woman needs. [2]
Should I use a high dose for brain health?
A small sleep-deprivation experiment used a single high dose to answer a particular laboratory question. It did not establish a routine amount for brain health or brain fog. Copying that protocol would go beyond the evidence, particularly when the participants and conditions differ from your own circumstances. [3]

What are the limits of this evidence?
Each card separates the finding from the limits. The participants, formulation and duration are part of the answer.
Kreider et al., 2017
Daily lower doses can raise muscle creatine stores gradually; a loading phase is optional.
- Who
- Mixed populations in the reviewed research
- Dose
- Includes 3 to 5 g/day maintenance protocols
- Duration
- Varied across studies
- Limits
- A position statement synthesising varied research. It is not an individual dosing prescription. Several authors disclose industry relationships.
Postmenopausal meta-analysis, 2026
Small lean-mass and leg-press strength benefits were found overall; bone density was unchanged.
- Who
- 608 women randomised in seven trials; lean mass pooled 338 women, leg-press strength 111
- Dose
- Varied; benefits were seen in trials using at least 5 g/day with resistance training
- Duration
- 12 to 104 weeks
- Limits
- Mostly some risk-of-bias concerns; not prospectively registered. Dose and training varied together. Lean mass includes water, and its prediction interval included no effect.
